3rd text commentary: THEY FIND A DEAD SPERM WHALE WITH SIX KILOS OF PLASTIC IN THE STOMACH IN INDONESIA

Header

They find a dead sperm whale with six kilos of plastic in the stomach in Indonesia

Summary

This news refers to the appearance of a dead sperm whale with plastic waste in its organism.

Indonesia is the fourth most populated country in the world, which has the effect of spreading many pollutants to the oceans. Among which are the plastic waste. It should also be borne in mind that Indonesia is composed of hundreds of islands through which important transit lines of ships pass. The damage caused by plastic in the sea is evident, because they take years to degrade and often end up in the stomach precious marine animals, especially large cetaceans. The news refers to the death of a sperm whale that arrived on the coast with its stomach full of plastic and which has provoked a reaction from the Indonesian government that has admitted the gravity of the situation accepting the 30% decrease in marine waste for 2025

The subject of this news did not contain a very specific vocabulary that I did not understand.

Text commentary

I have chosen this news because it is an issue that seems to be hidden from society precisely because the effects of pollution occur in the oceans of distant places. In addition, those affected are the animals that suffer the consequences of the actions of human beings. That is why it is important to bring news like this to light.

Animals are living beings that must be protected by self-interest of human beings. It is clear that if we continue to pollute in the way that is now done marine species will disappear little by little until they are extinct. The news illustrates the damage suffered by splendid animals such as cetaceans that after having hunted and molested for centuries now it is that we harm them by throwing tons of plastic waste into the sea that can cause their death. It seems quite serious that we are capable of harming species of this kind that we all know have a high degree of intelligence and social skills.

The news speaks of Indonesia, but this problem not only affects Indonesia, but the whole world. From that sperm whale in Indonesia, to a turtle in the Maldives, to the species that inhabit our Mediterranean Sea where there is currently 34% less fish than in 1950. This is a result of pollution.

Fortunately, many organizations are defending this cause but it is still necessary to raise awareness of this problem to everyone. To that end we must understand that everything begins with each individual who must be aware of his responsibility to avoid throwing any kind of waste. The marine species will thank you.

3rd TEXT COMMENTARY: Whales

Whales Became Really Stressed During World War Two, Study Shows

SUMMARY
It has been discovered that whales suffer from stress. It is known by the amount of cortisol, a stress-response hormone, found in earwax from earplug laminae, a growth layer. By examining cortisol levels and matching them to key moments in history, they were able to see that the levels increased when whaling was at its peak in 1960. They were also stressed between 1920 and 1930 (World War I) and World War II. This shows us that whales got stressed not only by their persecution, but also by the impact of war, the noise, the submarines, the explosions.
Even though their level decreased by 1970 when whaling was reduced to zero in the Northern Hemisphere, they have been increasing ever since. It is probably because of the water’s rising temperature, but it is unknown if some other human activities may be at fault.
Whales are important to see the effect of human activity on the marine habitat.

TEXT COMMENTARY
Through this information we can conclude that we are not alone in this world. All the things we do don’t only affect us human, but all the animals that live here too. We should watch out what we do to our planet and what of these shouldn’t be done. Correct them and make of this world a better place, so not only we can live a better life, but also all of the animals of the planet which suffer from our wars, our destruction and our irresponsibility. We should be aware that we are not alone in this planet, and we can still save it from disaster and suffering. If we succeed we will see a reduction of stress levels on whales, and also on humans.

Un altre font de culpa se li dona al instagram, on es diu que pateixen de transtorns emocionals derivats del estrés

Notícia 03: La capacitat de reconeixement de l'ésser humà

- Heading:                                                     How many faces can the human being recognize?

- Summary:
A study from York University, along with Aberdeen University, with people has studied the capacity of recognizance of the human being. The one studied has focused on the capacity of recognize faces without naming them.
The study cam to the conclusion that the ones with less capacity of recognizance is able to recognize the approximated number of a thousand faces. Meanwhile, the ones with the most capacity (named super-recognizers) are able to recognize around 10 000 human faces.
This study was realized in order to show that human being can train their capacity of recognizance so they would be able to recognize an unlimited number of faces. If they were able to reach that capacity they would be able to work as “facial recognizers”.

        - Super-recognizer people: human being with the capacity of recognize a huge number (around 10 000) of human faces.

- Text commentary:
This new talk about a study that has investigated the human face recognizance capacity. The people who participated in this study were able to recognize between a thousand and 10 000 faces. If you think about it, you sure will think that this number is very high, and, indeed it is, but for our brain that has trained for years it is not. Our brain has been training for our entire life to remember things like people's name or the name of the streets...
In my opinion, the most interesting part if that the study suggests that this recognizance capacity can be very strong, as long as you train it. We could be talking of a new type of job: the human face-recognizers. We are also entering the whole brain capacity, that even though we think that we know a lot about it, there is always something new to learn or study of.
